Demon Copperhead

However, I did just recently DNF two of them.

Um, I started Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, and it, uh, her-- I was a little bit disappointed by her last book.

Um, and this one just again kinda started out just being very dense and very, like, too literary for me, I guess.

Um, and I think that was kind of my criticism about the, the other one of hers.

What are they? The Poisonwood Bible and Demon Copperhead.

Both won Pulitzer's, I think.

Didn't they? I think so.

She can write a book.

The Poisonwood Bible takes place in Africa.

That was not as heartbreaking to me as Demon Copperhead.

That is a retelling of David Copperfield, but a modern retelling of it.

Shepard Snider spoke with her about his legacy.

Kingsolver, who grew up in Nicholas County, is known for her own works like The Poisonwood Bible and Demon Copperhead, the latter of which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2023.

She first knew Wendell Berry as a family friend and later as a writing mentor.

Berry worked with Kingsolver's father to help preserve the Red River Gorge during her teenage years.

Um, you may remember Barbara Kingsolver from a great number of books.

She just publishes hit after hit after hit, but most recently she published Demon Copperhead, which came out in 2022, won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize, and just, like, it was everywhere.

This is a different type of story.

This is not a retelling.

you're gonna go back spooky season yeah no it's true yeah I do kind of change with the seasons that's true I mean I picked up a book I think I was telling you last time we met in person I had picked up Demon Copperhead yes but then that's not a summer read and I'm like I'm halfway through it and I'm like I really want to have a nice read on the beach and instead I'm reading this like heavy story so yeah I am someone who reads multiple books at once

How do you do that? In my brain, it's pretty like I keep them pretty separate.

I don't know.

But like if I'm at home in the evening, then I'm reading probably Demon Copperhead.

But then when I went to the beach the other day, I just was reading a different fiction book for the vibe.

She had actually just sent me Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, which is about a boy in Southern Western Virginia.

It's an amazing book.

And so I started reading that.
