Delia Green

Number eight, One More Rounder Gone.

Author unknown, but this song is better known as Delia's Gone.

The first recording was in 1924 by Reese Dupree.

But it was popularized by Josh White, Pete Seeger, Blind Willie McTell, and two vastly different versions by the man in black, Johnny Cash.

Here's the story.

Delia Green was a 14-year-old black girl living in the Yamacraw neighborhood of Savannah, Georgia.

She was in a sexual relationship with Moses Houston, a local boy one year her senior.

On Christmas Eve in the year 1900, the pair were visiting a friend named Willie West.

Yeah, but you know, this could have been one of Steve's favorite murder songs.

As it tells the tale of a 14-year-old Delia Green who would be shot by Moses Houston on December 25th, 1900 in Savannah, Georgia.

I didn't know it was based on a true story either.

Houston said it was an accident, but witnesses said he shot her for calling him a son of a bitch.
