there was a bit of news that came out earlier this week that i wanted to touch upon and it doesn't have to do with anybody on the ice it has to do with people off the ice and it's been a busy off season in in that respect for the pittsburgh penguins of course when you introduce a new ownership group that is going to be you know news that makes waves across the nhl but we learned earlier this week that mario lemieux has sold the remaining shares of the Penguins in the midst of this sell to the Hoffman Group.

And that was reported by Dejan Kovacevic of DK Pittsburgh Sports.

So for the first time since 1984, Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins aren't explicitly connected when it comes to finances or ownership or as the case was early on as a player.

Here, I'm going to get concrete with you.

Bruce Garrioch, longtime reporter for the Ottawa Citizen, had something on one of these pages that I checked out that Drake Batherson, boy, if there's any city in the NHL should be familiar with Batherson outside of Canada's capital, it would be Pittsburgh.

He is a pending unrestricted free agent, meaning that he would have to be signed before next summer.

And what he's looking for, according to Bruce, is an eight-year term.

I'll bet he still can snipe, by the way, just a deadly, effortless shooter.

And this was out at Denver University.

Sakic spoke with reporters out there and talked about Cale McCarr, who's coming up in a similar situation.

You can't let McCarr go.

I, I don't wanna do any of that stuff.

I just wanna play hockey," which, by the way, would be the most Geno possible approach to all of this.

[laughs] Least of all, having to feel compelled that he's gotta meet with reporters in every single city because one of the NHL's better players of this generation is gonna be stepping down.

This way, he's just a guy, kinda, and he just goes through the season and does things without any additional attention, kinda.

And then maybe as you get later into the season and you see how things are going for the team, what everybody's mood is, how they're feeling about nostalgia or not nostalgia or anything, and then he makes it clear, "Hey, listen, this is gonna be it for me," that allows him to just put up with whatever it would be, a month or two or just a couple weeks of dealing with all the cameras and microphones and everything else.
