when you go backpacking in the backwoods or anything you put deet on to keep like the mosquitoes off of you it is

uh it was introduced in 1946 and it's actually called let me get this right diphthalmata tulamide uh which is an anti-mosquito formulation so It was made by the military, but it eventually became, I think, backwoods off and cutter and all of those insect repellents.

But creatures of the air, I find them, you know.

But this learning mosquito, so the mosquito, when you freshly apply DEET, the mosquito is repelled by it.

But as it fades, it's less effective because, you know, it's working on the olfactory sense, the smell that the mosquito has.

And, and being very cautious about getting... you know, recognizing you got a tick bite, getting them off within a certain time.

Given dengue fever and malaria and other things transmitted by mosquitoes, for your pediatric patients, what are your favorite go-to insect repellents?

Yeah, so the UK NHS advice at the minute is that things containing DEET are the best option.

I don't know if that's the same in the US, but it's certainly the advice here and that they can be used on children from two months upwards.

And I actually think in the States, maybe there isn't even an age limit on it.

You know, I think that, you know, I don't recall what the CDC is currently.

I know they also say a keratin is an option.

Yeah, so the NHS say DEET is the best option, but if you're unkeen on DEET, then they give a list of four potential active ingredients.

One of them is picaridin, one of them is eucalyptus, and I can't remember the fourth one now, but there is a list of four and they basically say if it doesn't contain one of these four active ingredients, it's probably not going to be effective.

Modern repellents provide another layer of personal protection.

DEET, which was developed by the US military after World War II, became one of the most widely used mosquito repellents.

Repellents work largely by interfering with the mosquito's ability to detect or recognize a host rather than simply poisoning the insect.

Another mosquito control technique is the sterile insect method.

Bug spray is one of the things I'm particularly exposed to.

Unfortunately, all of the natural bug repellents, including the ones I make, are not quite as effective as the king of bug repellents, and that's DEET, which is one I used for years.

I think I always knew a little bit that it was not bad for you, but when I was young, I definitely just put tons of it on.

I didn't think about it.

Research reviewed by Duke University pharmacologists found that DEET causes diffuse brain cell death and behavioral changes in rats after frequent and prolonged use.

A separate study found that DEET inhibits acetylcholinesterase, a key enzyme in the central nervous system, and that it's the same enzyme that certain nerve agents target.

The Environmental Working Group notes that people who used to eat daily have reported rashes, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, headaches, and that with heavier exposure, researchers document memory loss, fatigue, muscle weakness, and tremors.

So if you're spending a lot of time outdoors, especially for months at a time, like all spring, for example, or up here, depending on how far north you go in Canada, And bug season lasts basically peak from like June right till September.
