Deer Isle

The rounding out of woman's sphere leaves her center still the home, and the home still centers in the woman, the country still centers in the home, and no mere change of womanly occupation can alter God's fundamental law of human society.

But for the comfort of those who would still see woman spinning as in the good old times, it is worthy of note that in Deer Isle, Maine, the spinning match is still extant.

True to patriotic tradition, the wool spinners there have formed a Martha Washington Benevolent Society, which for fifty years without a break has held an annual spinning match in August, twenty or more women assembling with their great wheels and spinning with all the old-time dexterity.

One of their number is one hundred and two years old, and during the past winter made entirely without help four large patchwork bed quilts, double bed size, and sold them at the sale which accompanies the match.

I need to go back to my only real evidence, the piece of paper Kid gave to his wife.

My hunch is these numbers represent coordinates that point to Deer Isle, Maine.

With so many small islands and inlets, Maine has thousands of potential hiding places.

There's something alluring about the ghostly open waters, rocky shores, and gloomy fog rolling out to sea.

I don't know who this boat captain is, but he must have something important to say if he's tracking us down on the water, fog and all.

At least I can tell he's leading us in the right direction to Deer Isle, Maine, the location to where Captain Kidd's coordinates lead to.

So we run, uh, we do stewardship and oversight on islands ki- all across the Maine coast.

My focus is a very large region, the mid-coast Maine, which goes from, um, Muscongus Bay through Deer Isle, um, which allows for...

Uh, my goal is, is to both oversee the islands and make sure they're being taken care of in that area.

Um, also to, like, provide access opportunities through stewardship.

We had this cleanup we did, the deer isle cleanup last weekend was, we had six boats launching out of Nahskeg, one boat launching out of Stonington, and a kayak crew from Osprey Echo's kayak, sea kayaking launching out of Stonington.

Yeah.

So again, we build the environment to maximize reliability as much as we can.

Now, when you're talking about landing, I know in Deer Isle, a lot of times they land at the baseball field, but what about other islands? Who decides where the helicopter would land?

As far as the decision where to land, we work in real time with the people on the ground to find the best and the safest landing zone possible for the helicopter.

Through what we call our access project, we've identified over 2,000 landing zones across the state that we know about in advance, that have identifiers that we know meet the width and length specifications that we need for the helicopter.

They find a receiving physician and a receiving bed generally before we're requested.

So that's all predetermined.

So as you stated before, in one day, you could be in Deer Isle, you could be in Rangeley, you could be in Fort Kent.
