Vancouver Island University relies heavily on the work of its unionized employees.

Numbers of CUPE Local 1858 perform a wide range of essential tasks across all VIU campuses, from housekeeping and food services to financial support and even research assistance at locations like the Deep Bay Marine Field Station.

The local president, Tiffany McLaughlin, says their work touches nearly every department within the university system.

The union recently negotiated improvements to working conditions for its members, including expedited arbitration processes, wage increases, and additional cultural and indigenous event days off.
