But, yeah, I run a few cows, and, you know, my love is the cattle business.

You'd probably call me a hobby farmer because I've only got about 40 head of cows, but I don't have enough to hire somebody to – to do the work so I depend on family and friends to kind of check on things when I'm gone and yeah my nephew called right before we started he's got he's got a place a lease place about 20 miles north of me that I'm gonna we're at we're at grass in Decatur I mean we are burnt up really and uh he's found this place that's got a lot of grass on he goes when are you gonna bring those cows and I said well they got calves on them right now I don't I don't want to wean them in 105 and

What's the toughest thing about auctioneering, the career of auctioneering?

Probably for me would be travel.

I would love it if I could figure out how to get everybody to bring their auction to Decatur, Texas, and I didn't have to go.

If you'd asked me that question 20 years ago, I'd have had a totally different answer because When I was younger, I loved traveling, going to new places that I had been to.

For more information or to volunteer, please visit LibriVox.org Recording by Tom Esker The Life of a Fossil Hunter by Charles Sternberg Chapter 5 Discovery of the Lutefork Beds of Kansas and Subsequent Work There 1877 and 1882-84 About the 1st of July, 1877, I received orders to go north to the Lutefork River in Nebraska to search for vertebrate fossils in beds of the Upper Miocene, called by Hayden the Lutefork Group.

I happened to meet, however, an old line hunter, Abernathy by name, who had brought into Buffalo his last load of buffalo hides, and he told me that a little above his cabin on the middle branch of the Sapa Creek in Decatur County there was the skull of a mastodon sticking out of the solid rock.

As a visit to his house would not take me far out of the way, I followed his lead and thanks to the observation of this old hunter, who was scalped in front of his door the next year by a band of hostile Kiowas, I had the privilege of discovering the rich fossil beds of the Lutefork Group in northwestern Kansas and found enough to do without crossing into Nebraska.

The whole country north of Buffalo was without human habitation until we reached the old man's cabin.

They then, at my request, brought water and threw it on the burning sacks that held the fossils.

This saved the fossils, but to do so we had to let everything else go.

On the 25th of April we started with our load for Decatur, the nearest railroad point.

We took the Henrietta road and camped on the Little Wichita, where, in the sandy shales of the upper Carboniferous or Permian, we found a locality rich in the fossil flora of that region.

And then we have, that's where the arena's at, off-school course, all that stuff, where we do practices and team workouts on, like, during the week or whatever.

And then also, if we're not, if we don't have a team workout, we have a facility that's being built right now at Fit and Wise in Decatur.

So we got a whole little locker room in there that they just put in for us and everything.

So during the week, if we want to go get better, we got a little key card and everything.
