Deborah, can I ask, what essential parts of patient care are we seeing that our patients aren't asking when they're traveling abroad for any type of surgery, be it cosmetic, be it vascular, be it dental, be it bariatric? What, what are we, what are we not asking properly?

Deborah McNamaraGUEST
They can, if they do some research, find out about the potential complications and problems of an operation, but I think there are some factors that are easy to underestimate, and one that we would think is quite important is infection control standards.

Deborah McNamaraGUEST
Um, so different countries have different spectra of bacteria that cause infection, and people who've had an operation are much more vulnerable to infection, especially if the operation involves any sort of implant.

Deborah McNamaraGUEST
So some types of breast surgery, some dental surgery, orthopedic surgery, vascular surgery, all of those types of operations might involve the use of an implant, which is a, a permanent device put into a patient.

Deborah McNamaraGUEST
And so the standards of infection prevention and control in the hospital and the way that device has been manufactured, all of the quality assurance that applies to it, they're really incredibly important things.

Deborah McNamaraGUEST
Um, and so they're quite difficult to find information about, and that's where the accreditation that Professor Heneghan referred to is important because when a hospital or a clinic's accredited, the standards and the routine practices around infection prevention and control are really emphasized during those types of visits, and it's not a guarantee that someone won't get an infection.

Debbie, is there anything our patients need to know about legal protection if something goes wrong abroad?
