And basically, the report that she shared found that there was not much clinical or financial savings in these platforms.

And then you have this great quarter from DaVita and you say, okay, they're raising guidance and what's going on here.

I think this is going to be an interesting space to watch.

I also think it ties into us internally.

What does it take to bring AI into a highly regulated industry where being approximately correct isn't good enough? For this episode of Get Reworked, I'm joined by Madhu Narasimhan, CIO of DaVita, the kidney care company serving more than 250,000 patients across thousands of clinics.

Maru leads with an idea she calls technology with intention, which is a way of cutting through the noise in the vendor space so she can focus on what helps patients, teammates, and nephrologists.

We talk about keeping a human in the middle, giving time back to the caregivers, and what her ideal AI agent would do in her kitchen.

We're all talking AI all the time, so you're kind of in the thick of it, but you're also in this very... critical and sensitive area where you're dealing with patients.

And so it kind of raises the stakes.

One of the things that I wanted to start off on is over at DaVita, you have been leading the efforts around AI adoption, around an idea that you call technology with intention.

And I was hoping that you could explain a little bit about what that means.

Absolutely.

And even in college, I remember like trying to do it sitting up and I couldn't.

And in my 20s, I got a job in at DaVita.

Mm-hmm.

And I was like, I am a big girl.

Well, then it was diversified clinical services and they're the largest management company, at least at the time and for managing US wound care centers.

So we'd go in and open hospital departments and clinics and wound care centers and then manage them kind of like, you know, maybe DaVita manages the dialysis or LabCorp manages the lab or Quest.

and we would manage the wound care center.

And, you know, I learned all kinds of things about wound care from a bit of a different angle and built a very nice and fulfilling career in the space.

I've become very intrigued by that discipline.

I would love to learn more about you and your work in total rewards and your path to where you are today with DaVita.

At the time I was working for a company called DaVita and I was in compensation and HR.

So obviously he looked at my profile.

He knows about me.

Like, that doesn't resonate with anybody.

So I started doing some research, and I noticed on the ADA website that these recipes in this f- cookbook and everything were all sponsored by a company called DaVita.

So I'm like, what's a DaVita? DaVita is the largest producer of equipment and facilities for dialysis in the country.

They have 6,600 remote dialysis facilities, like, where a person's waiting for their kidney transplant, and they have to go a couple times a week to get dialysis, and they go to, like, you know, it's in a strip mall, and you go get your dialysis there.

Yes.

No one will name any names, but it's not hard to imagine that some of the state's seven Fortune 500 companies may leave Colorado in pursuit of lower taxes.

Arrow Electronics, Newmont, Echostar, DaVita, Ball Corp, VF Corp, and Aventiv.

These companies pay good salaries, often pay property taxes, pay sales taxes on goods and services they buy from other Colorado businesses.

The net impact of a single Fortune 500 company is huge, writes the Denver Post, which is why states play the frustrating and never-ending game of pass the business with such intensity.
