Welcome back to JR Morning on a Tuesday and Detroit students are getting a new runway to opportunity.

After 13 years away the Davis Aerospace Technical High School is back at the Coleman A.

Young International Airport on the east side.

A 23 and a half million dollar renovation has transformed the former passenger terminal into classrooms focused on aviation and engineering and Drone technology.

And it is, It is absolutely something to see.

I'm always amazed but never surprised.

Speaking with Principal Michelle Davis, she is principal of Davis Aerospace Technical High School at Coleman A.

After this breakfast, you're going to the, uh, Davis Aerospace Technical-

Yes

... uh, High School's Return to City Airport.

We have two career technical education centers where students can learn various skills, everything from catering to cosmetology, to actually construction, construction trades.

And lastly, I would say in terms of helping our students understand career opportunities available, we have a wonderful counseling staff, and we have dedicated programs such as Davis Aerospace, which allows students to learn about different trades within aerospace.

They can work on the mechanical side, or they can gain their pilot's license.

Well, you know, it's kind of interesting because people don't realize how big the aerospace industry is here in the state of Michigan, so that's a good opportunity.

You know, it's interesting because when some of these kids look at construction, they're saying to themselves, "Ooh, that's me on the end of a dirty shovel, sweating like crazy." And that construction industry has changed incredibly, so there are a lot of career opportunities.

There are, and we're very fortunate because through these internships, through gaining these relationships with these corporations, we've actually placed students with construction management companies.

I was just on site at our Davis Aerospace building.

We're moving back to the former city airport.
