And I'm speaking with The Guardian's senior international correspondent, Luke Harding, who spent many years in Russia, about his new book, Betrayal, Trump, Putin and the New Age of Conquest.

In December this year, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, will wrap up his second five-year term at the helm.

He'll do so at a critical time for the UN, which is struggling for relevance in a world beset by ever-increasing conflict and by warnings of AI or climate Armageddon, and which is also facing a financial crisis and deep cuts to its budget.

A mighty harbor, a crucial meeting point of East and West for millennia, a place of architectural masterpieces, a metropolis with a history that goes back beyond the Roman Empire, back to Byzantium.

This is Istanbul, a city of 15 million people.

And that was how Istanbul took form, and that is the Istanbul of 15 million, some people say it's 20 million, that we know today.

I mean, if you look from an airplane over Istanbul, it looks like a planet, um, and a lot of those neighborhoods were created by migrants.

On ABC Radio National, this is Late Night Live, I'm David Marr, and I'm talking to Susie Hansen, who's the author of a book entitled From Life Itself: Turkey and Istanbul in the Age of Erdoğan.

Susie, your neighborhood was one of those neighborhoods that had been Greek, became a neighborhood of country folk, and it was Erdoğan who represented these people, was it not? And these people were the basis of his power.
