David Hicks

For Logres, that means somebody who comes to a class and will actually read the books that we're going to then be discussing in the seminar.

Now, I have three kind of ideal types in mind, if I can riff off of David Hicks for a second.

The first is a classical teacher in a brick and mortar classical classroom who is taking this kind of practically looking at practical application in mind.

I think anybody who is actually in the classroom and thinks, okay, I need to be able to lead these conversations with my students.

Now, on with the show.

[upbeat music] Our guest today is a writer, designer, entrepreneur, and the daughter of legendary British interior designer David Hicks.

She's been a model and on-air personality for everyone from Bravo to the BBC, and has had her hand in the design world for over two decades, from hotels to home collections.

Her fourth book, Entertaining with a Side of Chaos, is part memoir, part tablescaping guide, documenting the tables as well as her approach to hosting guests.

If you could raid one designer's archives, whose would it be?

Oh, God, that would be maybe, I guess maybe David Hicks had some really great stuff.

Yeah.

Mm-hmm.

Mm.

David Hicks was like, he was a-

Mm-hmm

There's so much going on in her life, and I think these new paintings reflect that.

Yes I mean potentially she could have taken to so many career paths and she did certainly in her life seem to have several careers simultaneously and packed so much in but at this stage certainly art was one option that she was really interested in and we get it in references in her early letters of the time, letters to school friends, letters to student friends, in her letters to David Hicks in the early 40s she's saying she's painting a lot and She mentions influences.

She mentions her interest in Paul Nash.

And we get that coming out in the surrealist sort of landscapes that I think we'll be talking about more later on.

So I started researching.

mid-century designers and I discovered the work of David Hicks, the late English David Hicks, and he layered pattern and colour over mid-century minimalism.

Gio Pontini did the same thing.

So I thought, why don't I start layering pattern and colour over 90s minimalism?

I'm lucky I get to travel.

Definitely there's design icons.

I touched on the late English David Hicks, Joe Ponte.

Like I said to you, I know I'm a maximalist, but I also love clean lines.
