And she's had direct line contact.
John HearneSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
52:19
So David being the, the minister in charge of health, or the, their spokesperson on health, it was better that David dealt with all that-
Fran CurryHOST
52:27
Yeah
John HearneSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
52:27
... because he had the ear in on it, you know what I mean? He knew all the ins and outs of health.
Fran CurryHOST
52:29
David Cullinane, of course, yeah.
John HearneSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
52:30
Yeah, yeah.
Fran CurryHOST
52:31
Yeah.
Ciaran CudahyHOST

And central to that conversation was the issue of drug debts a- and drug intimidation.
Ciaran CudahyHOST
1:02
Actually, I, I know it being brought up in the Dáil today, even, uh, David Cullinane from Sinn Féin, uh, railing against what a scourge this is in society, and it has to be said, the Minister for Justice agreeing with him on most fronts.
Ciaran CudahyHOST
1:14
Um, but on this show yesterday, it was Deborah who captured most people's attention because she got in touch with her story of drug dealers calling to her family home to collect money that her son owed to them.
Ciaran CudahyHOST
1:29
Now, if you missed Deborah yesterday, here's just a little flavor of what she had to say.

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s are being questioned while two surviving children remain critically ill in hospital.
Colm O'MongainHOST

And for the latest on this, we're joined by news and security correspondent with the Irish Independent, Robin Schiller, and by David Cullinane, Sinn F- Sinn Féin TD for Waterford.
Colm O'MongainHOST
0:22
Uh, Robin, to you first.
Colm O'MongainHOST
0:23
Uh, two people arrested.
Colm O'MongainHOST
2:00
[lips smack] Okay, Robin, thanks very much for that.
Colm O'MongainHOST
2:02
That's Robin Schiller, uh, Irish Independent news and security correspondent.
Colm O'MongainHOST
2:06
Uh, as I said, David Cullinane, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, also on the line.
Colm O'MongainHOST
2:10
Uh, welcome to Drive Time.
Dermot KeyesPANELIST
5:20
So it, it is at least welcome from that perspective that the investigation seems to be moving along pretty quickly.
Dermot KeyesPANELIST
5:26
Uh, but a-as has been pointed out within conversations we've had here in the newsroom, and indeed, I know Deputy David Cullinane has been speaking elsewhere this morning, there have been quite a number of, how would you put it, close calls of a similar nature to this, not only in Waterford, but elsewhere in many different places around the country, including one which, uh, in our locality within the last two months, uh, in which something similar could have happened was it not for certain circumstances.
Dermot KeyesPANELIST
5:53
And you also have to, uh, acknowledge the fact that quite a lot of the time, the Gardaí are very much on top of some of these matters and are preventing some serious situations from escalating even further.
Dermot KeyesPANELIST
6:03
And again, this is work that the guards can't talk about publicly.
Pádraig ByrneGUEST
9:19
Uh, well, I suppose, look, they're reluctant to get into the details at the moment because, obviously, it's an active investigation.
Pádraig ByrneGUEST
9:25
But the first person I actually happened upon at the scene down there was, uh, Sinn Féin TD, David Cullinane.
Pádraig ByrneGUEST
9:31
In tragedies like this, you often have politicians coming out and speaking.
Pádraig ByrneGUEST
9:36
He, he did seem genuinely shaken by the incident.
Michael O'TooleHOST
18:00
But there are medical reasons for which a family can be moved.
Michael O'TooleHOST
18:04
Now, my understanding is that, uh, David Cullinane, the local Sinn Féin TD, was involved.
Michael O'TooleHOST
18:09
He had been speaking to the family, and there were, were moves afoot to get the family out of that house.
Michael O'TooleHOST
18:16
They were gonna be moved.

8 MINS LATER

Danny De VaalGUEST
26:24
Um, she, she got very, very upset and, and said, "Was your money worth it? What was the money worth it?" Um, which in my opinion, kinda sums up, uh, what a lot of people in, in, in, in that estate are feeling right now.
Danny De VaalGUEST
26:40
And I suppose as the days, uh, you know, as the days turn, turn into weeks, and the, and the weeks turn into months, you know, that anger will only grow.
Michael O'TooleHOST
26:50
And I know you interviewed, uh, Deputy David Cullinane.
Michael O'TooleHOST
26:54
As I said, he was involved in trying to get the family moved.

And we can have a quick word now with David Cullinane, who is Sinn Féin TD for Waterford.
speaker_0HOST
0:05
And Deputy Cullinan, thank you for taking our call because this is devastating news this morning and you know this family.
David CullinaneGUEST
0:13
I do.
David CullinaneGUEST
1:43
And I know there is tears on that road, as you can imagine, and just people crying.
David CullinaneGUEST
1:48
absolutely devastated and just still in shock and when you know a family and you know as i said i only met them very recently myself it just sends a shiver down your spine it's it's just so heartbreaking particularly when there's a children involved so i think that heartbreak will be felt right across the island when people hear what happened and hear of the fatalities so obviously we just have to let the emergency services do their job and Garda Síochána have to do their job and my thoughts at this point in time are obviously with all of the surviving family members and people who are very close to that family and obviously the neighbours and the community and people will pull together as communities do but this is just utterly devastating and heartbreaking beyond belief.
speaker_0HOST
2:36
Thank you very much indeed, David Cullinane, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford.
speaker_0HOST
2:40
We'll be back after this.
Rachael EnglishHOST

Obviously, Joe, they're finding it difficult to come to terms with this because a mass murder like this, and that's what it is, it's a mass murder, is, is very unusual.
Joe CaulfieldCORRESPONDENT
8:35
Yes, of course, and I suppose to kinda give us a, a better insight into the impact this is having on the wider community, I'm joined now by Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, David Cullinane.
Joe CaulfieldCORRESPONDENT
8:46
David, you have been spending the morning again in the Beachwo- the Beach- Birchwood Estate, rather.
Joe CaulfieldCORRESPONDENT
8:51
Can you give us a sense of the atmosphere, not only in, in the estate itself, but amongst the wider Waterford city community?
John CumminsGUEST
3:49
start of the year.
ÁineHOST
3:50
David Cullinane, do we need that honest conversation? Is it chronic underfunding or is this mismanagement?
David CullinaneGUEST
3:59
Well, there is no honesty or transparency in relation to the health budget, so we are looking at a cost overload of about €600 million or €700 million for this year.
David CullinaneGUEST
4:07
We don't know how much of the funding for this year in the budget is for new developments and for what's called existing levels of service for the health service to stand still.
ÁineHOST
6:39
consensus clearly on health spending.
ÁineHOST
6:41
And unfortunately, we will have to come back to housing and cost of living another day.
ÁineHOST
6:45
My thanks to Minister John Cummins, to Marie Sherlock, Labour TD for Dublin Central, to David Cullinane, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford and all of the guests who joined us earlier.
Mags McCarthyGUEST
3:22
Martin Daly's from Galway, Roscommon.
Mags McCarthyGUEST
3:24
There's, there's, um, then there's Sorcha Clarke, um, Peter Roach, and David Cullinane.
Mags McCarthyGUEST
3:29
Outside of, we, oh, David Cullinane is Munster as well.
Mags McCarthyGUEST
3:32
But th- there's Martin Daly, he's gonna facilitate an informal meeting on Wednesday at, around 12:30 with the Oireachtas Health Committee members.
Mags McCarthyGUEST
3:41
And then he said for me, I'm, I'm to email Padraig Reidy 'cause he's chairing the Oireachtas Health Committee, and Padraig has been massively supporting this, by the way-
