David Coleman

So, so that would've been 1976, where I knew I wanted to be in sport.

I knew I wanted to be a football commentator, but, um, somebody, probably, I mean, Steve was talking earlier about John Watson and, um, fearing approaching him, but I actually used to write to him, to Barry Davies, to David Coleman, all these established commentators, and the thing that came back from all of them was that written journalism was the way to, to get into it.

So that was where I tried to get my first break.

Um, and it was at the station where Steve now works, where I did get my big break through winning a competition.

Yeah.

You know, a- and the same way when I watch athletics, even I'm, I'm not knocking Steve Cram because I think he's a very good commentator.

But even these days when I watch it and they're doing a run, and they reach the last lap, I still hear in my head David Coleman going, "The bell." [laughs] Do you know what I mean?

Abso- I loved Coleman.

I go

all the way back to David Coleman.

Don't worry about me.

Yeah.
