David Chipperfield

I'm Alice Rawsthorne, co-founder of Design Emergency with Paola Antonelli, and since launching it six years ago, Paola and I have had the pleasure of interviewing many global leaders in design and architecture who are all helping to build a better future.

And we're thrilled that our interviewee in this episode is one of the most influential architects of our time, David Chipperfield.

David grew up on a farm in southwest England and worked for Britain's architectural grandees, Richard Rogers and Norman Foster, before opening his own practice in 1985.

David Chipperfield Architects now has offices in Berlin, London, Milan, Santiago de Compostela and Shanghai.

It's responsible for many memorable buildings, from the Neues Museum in Berlin to the Royal Academy in London and the San Michele Cemetery in Venice.

Its current works in progress include the Nobel Center in Stockholm and the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

In England, it's not.

And I think we've humiliated the profession and we need to get planning back onto the table.

And if he hadn't done those reconstructions, works of repair... from the late 40s into the late 1950s in Munich, you know, we would not be speaking about him now.

I mean, he would not become an architect that has been of interest to, you know, Aldo Rossi or the Smithsons or James Starling or David Chipperfield.

And, you know, he was admired by Ross Mousson.

So absolutely, you know, from the late 40s, you know, Munich is in... pretty devastated by aerial bombardment.

Claro, claro, claro.

Hablabas también en, en, en algunas de, de, de, bueno, pues de tus en-entrevistas, ¿no? En una entrevista reciente que, que le hacía a David Chipperfield hablábamos del progreso y cómo, es verdad, como por primera vez la idea del progreso se estaba cuestionando, ¿no?

Sí.

Porque no siempre el progreso ahora implica, eh, unas mejores soluciones para, para nuestro, para nuestro planeta, ¿no? Y para, al final, para la sostenibilidad y para, bueno, pues una buena praxis, ¿no? ¿Cómo-- Desde vuestro estudio, cómo tenéis en cuenta estos, eh, estos parámetros, no, de la sostenibilidad y cómo intentáis día a día, eh, devolverle al planeta Tierra, eh, eso que nos ha dado?
