They're a highlight for many park-goers, and they're great for Disney because it keeps people at the park into the evening.

But there's al- also neighbors, so neighboring communities.

So when these fireworks would go off, then there was a lot of smoke that would then drift into neighboring communities, and the neighboring communities really did not like this.
10:09
Um, it was a both a nuisance and concern regarding like, you know, what is this, uh, smoke that's coming in our area, and is it a problem? Is there anything to be worried about i- in terms of health effects? So the Disney company wanted to see if there was a way to dramatically reduce or eliminate the smoke that was being generated for their firework displays.

So the more nitrogen and hydrogen and the less carbon left over, the cleaner the fuel would be.
11:35
And so that was our first s- attempt, was, well, let's see what this molecule does if we add a little bit of oxidizer like ammonium nitrate or something, and then we can throw in a little bit of a colorant like sodium chloride because sodium makes a yellow-orangish color, and see what happens.
11:52
And that was essentially our first hit, which was, wow, this burns really, really cleanly, and you get like spectacular colors now that you don't have some of the soot like blocking your light emission.
12:06
And then we just started exploring more and more in that area.
