And I'd seen that documentary that, you know that docu- I think it was...

I forget the name, but it has a lot of David Carr in it, and it was around the time where they thought they were gonna have to sell The Times to Carlos Slim, and-

Mm-hmm

... basically it was a moment right before they got their shit together.

Do you have advice for aspiring authors?

You know what? I really I feel like I was trained as a journalist and my late mentor, David Carr, who was a columnist at The New York Times, used to say, keep typing until it turns into writing.

You know, I think there's this idea that like I need to be inspired to write fiction and I need to like go for a walk and have inspiration.

I'm like, no, no, no.

And then in parentheses, not her real name, you know.

I just think about David Carr's memoir where he kind of treated it as like a reporting assignment within his own family and personal life versus simply my own recollection of my own events as well.

Have you worked on other stories like that where it is turned into more of a reporting endeavor?

First of all, The Night of the Gun is one of my favorite memoirs.

And I love that David Carr decided to report his memoir because he didn't remember anything because he was so blotto.

It's an addiction and recovery memoir.

And he doesn't remember the addiction part.

But before we get into that, Robert, um, some producer notes, and I'll let you, uh, I'll let, I'll let you lead us off here.

Uh, the note I got in my producer's meeting was th- a thank you for curating, uh, the David Carr interview.

Mm-hmm.

Um, uh, especially it was kind of a passive-aggressive note to me because I sometimes have the habit in my writing of including a lot more detail than necessary, when really, like, the best writing takes all the most important stuff.

Yeah.

I, um, my note was the, uh, make sure you keep following up on, uh, in relation to that, just to kind of give people a back idea of how that came together.

That David Carr interview was one where we had kind of planted the seed for that all the way back in, uh, all the way back in May, and just kind of circled back and followed up on that.

So that, that's kind of my production note.

Right.

It's like, it's like you, you mentioned in, in the last interview we did David Carr's book, right?

Right.

About, about drug addiction and, and, and, and that's, uh, another example, and when you read that book, I really connected it to, to my food addiction.
