David Brakke

The Desert Fathers are one of the most cool histories that very few of us know about.

My f- one of my favorite scholars, well, non, non Latter-day Saint scholars, is a guy named David Brakke, and his first book that broke on was called Demons and the Making of the Monk.

Wow.

And brilliant book, but it's about the fourth-century Desert Fathers who go out, uh, in this period, kind of post-martyrdom, where they're going out and practicing mastici- monasticism, and there they encounter and have fistfights with the devil.
