You were just talking about... um an inspiring piece that you saw on dave kalama who was just in here talking about this is 40 and you were super inspired by it so i think we're always what's really cool is you can look where you are in dana point whether it's surf or paddle or foil or whatever you can look at guys 10 years older and they're still hammers

yeah

you know like there's we're surrounded by ageless hammers that continue to perform at a level that are super is super inspiring right

for sure and it's like you see Dave Kalama like finish M2O or something for example and you know he's not gonna win the race but honestly like he has my most respect even over the guy who won you're just like dude Dave is so gnarly you know what I mean and he would be the most humble and the most smiley and stoked guy that's what I noticed like you said the older hammers that are just still freaking grinding and they're competitive and all that stuff it's rad yeah

well I guarantee that you're inspiring young guns that are 40 going god look at Dave's 50 look what he's doing every day

And I understand it's different once you're in the water.

And I think what was hard maybe for the first group of guys who were fortunate enough, the strapped guys, like Rush Randall, Mark Angulo, Brett Lickle, Pete Cabrinha, Derek Doaner, Dave Kalama, obviously, Laird, and then Buzzy Kerbox.

I think for that group, Mike Waltz, I think for that group, they had that place for... on their own for a while.

So, so Al and I really just started by, "Let's go, let's go build a board." You know, we wanted to get- You know, one of these nice long thin weapons at the time.

You know, Dave Kalama was just coming out with the Barracuda and, and, um, you know, we couldn't get them in, in Perth, so it was, "Hey," you know, swung around to Al's house, and we just muddled our way through Shape3d and, and just built a couple of SUPs.

Um-

Mm-hmm

Yeah.

And then, uh, and then Sunova, KT- Um, and, you know, John Amonson is bringing a board down.

Um, Dave Kalama, like one of my heroes, you know, he, he broke the back of the downwind SUP journey for me, so, you know, really, really cool to be working with Dave.

Um-

I had an absolute legend in the studio with me.

This is Dave Kalama.

If you do anything on the ocean or in the ocean or in the wind, You know that name.

Dave is an absolute icon in water sports.

And he's done, you name it, he's done it.

And the coolest part is he's the most humble, approachable, nicest guy, best storyteller, and an absolute legend.

Um, you know, all just icons of surf, Kelly Slater, you know, Peter Mill, uh, Ross Clark Jones, Tom Carroll, right.

Craig, Dave Kalama.

It was just this like stacked, uh, trip of people that it was just mind-blowing that i even got picked and got to go and i was the gram alongside rye on that trip who is like also an incredibly talented and and freakishly um exciting like surfer to watch um but yeah like that just seeing that and all the surfing that went down on that trip to me like just influenced me so much.

And I would say had a lot like played a big role in my decisions later on in my own career, just seeing Kelly sort of that was the year he had taken a sabbatical or just took a year off the tour and didn't know what he wanted to do.
