But Dave Emerson, the CEO at Virgin, said that the results demonstrate that Virgin has become a stronger and more resilient airline.

He said, "...our strategy is working.

We have built a simpler, more focused business with a primarily domestic network, targeted short-haul international services and global connectivity through our airline partners." That strategy together with the continued benefits of our transformation program has strengthened the quality of our earnings and positioned us well for the future.

It can't last, though.

Virgin's hinting at fare increases in the coming year, and CEO Dave Emerson says its fuel bill will be significantly up, too.

Australia will provide five million dollars in aid to Nepal to be used for food, emergency shelter, and medical support as the country grapples with the aftermath of catastrophic flash floods.

More Australian consular staff will also arrive in Nepal in the coming hours.
