In today's episode, we have already seen the splendor of Ayodhya, the order of its government and the capable ministers surrounding Dasharatha.

The king stands among loyal and effective counselors like the rising sun encircled by radiant rays.

Now inside that apparently complete royal world, a lack comes into view that wealth, armies and administration cannot answer.

Dasharatha, powerful, righteous and learned in Dharma, is distressed by his desire for a son.

He has no son who can continue the lineage.

Within the world of kingship, his personal longing is inseparable from the continuity of the Ikshwaku line.

In simple terms, this means for all his power and righteousness, King Dasharatha is troubled by his desire for a son because he has no son to carry the lineage forward.

Food and water were plentiful, the sweetest music resounded on all sides, and the city was famous throughout the land for its holy men.

The workmen rejoiced in the skill of their hands, the soldiers held the honor of Ayodhya dearer than life itself, while over all ruled King Dasharatha, full of virtue, wisdom, and valor.

But there was one deep shadow in this city of sunshine.

The king had no son to succeed him.

One day he consulted the priests, who told him that the sacrifice of a horse would win for him the favor of the gods, and without delay preparations were made for the ceremony, which was conducted with greatest care, with the result that the noble king, to his unbounded joy, was promised the reward not of one son, but four.

In due time, four sons were born to King Dasharatha, and the name given to the first was Rama, who grew up to become a youth of more than ordinary strength, skill, bravery, and beauty.

One day he met a holy man who told him that at the time of his birth, the gods had created a very large number of bears and monkeys, who would one day be useful to him in the work which he was destined to do.

On another day, a priest came to him and told him that his friends, who formed a community of hermits, were greatly troubled by a band of demons, and that they would be glad of his help against their dreadful foes.

Its grandeur is visible in planned movement, in roads, entrances, markets and the ordered circulation of public life.

King Dasharatha causes the city to flourish as the lord of the gods does his celestial city.

Ayodhya has gates and archways, well arranged inner markets, many kinds of engines and weapons and craftsmen of every kind.

Government, defence, commerce and skilled work occupy the same urban picture.

He is powerful, a vanquisher of enemies, rich in friends and master of his senses.

In wealth and other stores, he is like Indra and Vaishravan.

like radiant Manu protecting the world, King Dasharatha dwelling there protects his realm.

yatha manur mahateja lokasya parirakshita tatha dasharatho raja vasan jagad palayat In simple terms, this means as the radiant Manu protected the people, so King Dasharatha protected and governed his realm.

The catalogue moves through the preparations for Rama's consecration, its obstruction through Kaikeyi, Rama's exile, King Dasharatha's grief and the king's death.

It includes the sorrow of the people, the encounter with the Nishada ruler, the charioteer's return, the crossing of the Ganga, the meeting with Bharadwaja and the arrival at Chitrakuta.

Then come Bharata's arrival, the effort to propitiate Rama, the water right for their father, the royal role of the sandals, residence at Nandigramma and the movement into the Dandaka forest.

we move away from the process of composition and performance and toward the royal world in which Rama's chronological story will unfold.

The Ikshvaku line comes into view, then Kosala and its capital Ayodhya.

From there, we will enter the world of King Dasharatha.

Swami would say that in that anger, in that, uh, pain, he cries out like this, but being such a great devotee that he is.
