Darrel 'Darry' Curtis

There is a family of the Curtis's.

And there's Ponyboy Curtis, Daryl Curtis, and Soda Pop Curtis.

Only Daryl gets a normal name.

Yeah.

Right.

Yeah.

Played by Daryl Curtis.

But it was confusing.

...

Darrell Curtis from The Outsiders?

[laughs] Yeah.

Yeah, it's Johnny.

Okay.

Cooking dinner.

So I went with Darrell Curtis.

Like, he's gotta take care of his two younger brothers.

Me too.

When they're walking home later, Scott, I love when Sherry, uh, starts asking about [laughs] she starts asking about Darry.

She starts asking about Patrick Swayze.

Did you catch that?

She's like, uh, she's like, "I know, like, you know, I know Soda.

Like I've seen him and he's cute, blah, blah.

Who's Darry? [laughs] What's he about?" And Pony's answer is, "He's big and roofs houses." [laughs]

[laughs] Well, the, i- in the book there's more of that.

Patrick might have looked like a physical powerhouse, but he could convey vulnerability without losing the sense of strength that made him interesting.

The real breakthrough, though, came in 1983, when Francis Ford Coppola cast him as Daryl, Daryl Curtis, in The Outsiders.

The film assembled an almost absurd collection of young talent.

Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Ralph Macchio and C. Thomas Howell, several of whom would go on to become major stars in their own right.
