Dark forest hypothesis

Yeah, we're going to know about that.

Today, this is the dark forest hypothesis.

The theory that basically states that our planet and species exist within a big, dark, scary forest.

There are plenty of other planets and species out there, but they're hiding from the big bad wolves that lurk among the trees.

Surely there is someone else out there.

There just has to be.

right and that's basically the fermi paradox in a nutshell we've already actually discussed this before on this very channel but in this video we're going to get a bit deeper into one particular theory that might solve the fermi paradox the dark forest hypothesis But first of all, I'll not assume that you've seen that previous video, or let alone remember it, and let me tell you what the Fermi Paradox is.

Fermi began life in a pretty offhand way.

And basically is I find that artificial intelligence and the way it's going forward is a spiritual issue as much as it is an ethical one.

So I've been reading this book this week called The Dark Forest Theory of the Internet.

And it's based on a science fiction, a Chinese science fiction trilogy, if I'm not mistaken.

The Dark Forest Theory, which actually has to do with aliens.

And I thought I was reading, I thought I had just picked up a book that was all about artificial intelligence and sort of the like, you know, danger.

Not necessarily the danger, but just the reality of artificial intelligence, let's be honest.

The idea was conceived by economist Robin Hanson and I address my criticisms to him directly in the video, so check that out if you haven't already.

At the end of that video, I said that if you guys were interested, I would be happy to weigh in with my thoughts on the other most popular idea out there, and that is the dark forest hypothesis.

And indeed, many of you said, yes, please.

So today...

Attack.

Whilst this might cost them some resources, that would pale into insignificance compared to their own demise, and thus essentially it represents a neutral action and the best play available.

Proponents of the Dark Forest hypothesis cite this game-theoretic underpinning as its major strength.

combined with the fact it explains the great silence it seems like Dark Forest has everything buttoned up pretty well.

A theory constructed entirely from game theory, the physics of cosmic distance and the cold algebra of survival in a universe where trust is impossible and ignorance is lethal.

It is called the Dark Forest Theory.

and what it says about the meaning of cosmic silence will fundamentally change how you interpret every signal humanity has ever sent into the sky.

The theory did not originate in a scientific journal or a university lecture hall.

These ideas were not taken particularly seriously by mainstream science at the time.

They were treated as interesting thought experiments, the kind of dark scenarios that science fiction is uniquely suited to explore but that real-world scientists could safely set aside in favour of more optimistic frameworks.

The dark forest theory changed that calculation.

Not because Liu Qixin had access to information other authors lacked, but because his formulation distilled the logic into something so clean, so minimal in its assumptions, and so resistant to comfortable counter-arguments that it demanded engagement even from researchers who found its conclusion repellent.

So, the

dark forest theory.

Here we go.

We're going to jump in to an even scarier one.

And complex life is truly rare.

So out of those theories, the Great Filter, zoo, dark forest theory, which idea feels most believable to you? What are you zoning in on?

Well, I don't like the dark forest theory because that tells me that we're all looking at everything as a threat.

Then technologist-made filters include a genetic accident that runs wild, nuclear war, etc.

Now my favorite explanation for this lack of aliens, is the dark forest hypothesis, which suggests that rational civilizations may adopt a first strike strategy because announcing their existence to unknown competitors is existentially dangerous.

If you think about it, what's the smartest move to make if you encounter a stranger in a dark forest? You know that you're spotting them before they have spotted you.

Now, what are the different scenarios that are possible? Now, the other stranger in the dark forest could be friendly.

And that would be a good outcome.
