Five sleep medicine specialists from the Alliance for Sleep reviewed the evidence on stopping and switching hypnotics.

The authors have financial conflicts, and the guidelines were sponsored by the manufacturer of Daridorexant, an orexin antagonist.

Here's what they found.

Benzodiazepines, Z-hypnotics, trazodone, quetiapine, and gabapentinoids all need a gradual taper after the patient has been on them for two or more weeks.

But we try really to avoid that.

There's a newer tablet that's been recently approved by NICE called Daridorexant for insomnia that's lasted for more than three months.

But again, because the evidence base is so strong for cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, it's only indicated after that has failed or if that's not appropriate.

And that would be something to discuss with a GP or with a sleep clinic.
