Dar es Salaam

The Americans were in Somalia doing Operation Restore Hope, and bin Laden's people bombed a hotel in Yemen.

Of course, in 1998, Al-Qaeda blew up the US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Car bombs exploded minutes apart.

Kenyan television is reporting that a van packed with explosives caused that blast.

What spooked him and what really used to drive him crazy was what he didn't know and how much was out there that he didn't know.

Two bombs minutes apart exploded without warning Friday outside the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

We had turned on the TV watching CNN, and John O'Neill put it together in relatively short order.

Then New York City FBI Director Louis Shaliro.

I think we're trying to do both here.

The way that Colin and I kind of introduced the book is in a chapter looking at the 1998 al-Qaeda bombings in East Africa of the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and in Dar es Salaam.

And what we're trying to do in that chapter is look at 1997, one year before those attacks, and figure out how comes sometimes a threat perception in official government documentation and the actual threat are so divergent.

So that's kind of how we set up the book.

And that trade is going on with the respective powers on the ground.

So these guys couldn't care less what happens in Dar es Salaam or Dodoma.

As long as they've fixed the guys in Mutukula, in Vihara Muro, in the Kagera side, all the way down

And the biggest source is Lake Tanganyika.

So that comes in for poultry.

So that business is going on regardless of who sits in Kampala or who sits in Dar es Salaam.

So the business relationship, the relationship between Tanzania and Uganda has to be seen through the lenses of the seat of power in Kampala and the seat of power in Budodoma stroke Dar es Salaam.

Well, you know, I had been the person that had led the deployment for the East Africa bombings in 1998.

In 1998, Al-Qaeda did bombings of the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam and the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya.

And and so I led that team out there thinking it was a Hezbollah bombing.

But then they do also do longer ones that, you know, for a week or 10 days or two weeks that go around pretty much most of South Africa.

So you can go into, into Dar es Salaam and just, you know, to all the major sites and countries.

So they have, they have some really unique itineraries, which would be fun to do at some point.

But you know, we, we did the four day itinerary that started in Pretoria.

But then they do also do longer ones that, you know, for a week or 10 days or two weeks that go around pretty much most of South Africa.

So you can go into, into Dar es Salaam and just, you know, to all the major sites and countries.
