His English literary friends, Tennyson, Rossetti, Buchanan, Browning, and others, had supplied the financial aid which enabled him to recuperate at Timber Creek.

Compatriots such as Emerson, John Burroughs, and a host of old-time friends were welcome visitors.

But nothing in his life or in his literary fortunes, he declared, had brought him more comfort and support, nothing had more spiritually soothed him than the warm appreciation and friendship of that true, full-grown woman, Anne Gilchrist, the sweet English widow who was now staying with her children in Philadelphia to be within easy reach of Whitman.

Chapter seven, A Day with Rossetti.

A hot July day of 1871.

The elder, whose name was Anastasia, was a tall stately girl with dark hair and gray eyes, but pale face, very much like the type we are familiar with from the pictures of Dante Gabriele Rossetti.

The younger sister was quite different.

She was fair, but fair in the Italian manner, that glorious ivory-white complexion so different from the pink and white of the North.

I am quite aware that innumerable persons still eat griddle cakes or waffles and syrup at the first meal of the day.

It is supposed that the poet-artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti ruined his health by eating huge portions of ham and eggs followed by griddle cakes and molasses for breakfast.

To me there has always been something incongruous between syrup and coffee.

They are mutually destructive.

In the history of the literature of the world, there are four supremely great poets.

No one can name a fifth who is in their class.

Those four, in chronological order, are Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and Goethe.

Every reader, every lover of good books, should know something of the work of these four mighty ones, for there is a perceptible difference between the best and the second-best.

His, having his collection in one book, really nice, okay? Or a good, good bunch of it.

Emma Goldman found on this occasion the opportunity of again meeting various English comrades and interesting personalities like Tom Mann and the sisters Rossetti, the gifted granddaughters of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, then publishers of the anarchist review The Torch.

One of her lifelong hopes found here its fulfillment.

She came in close and friendly touch with Peter Kropotkin, Enrico Malatesta, Nicholas Tchaikovsky, W. Cherkasov, and Louise Michel, old warriors in the cause of humanity, whose deeds have enthused thousands of followers throughout the world, and whose life and work have inspired other thousands with noble idealism and self-sacrifice.

One day, an elderly man approached him and asked if Rossetti would look at some sketches and give his honest opinion of the sketches.

So Rossetti looked at the drawings carefully.
