JD RyznarHOST

Uh, if this was recorded in the 1982 sessions for the album Goin' Down, personnel may include David Hungate, Dan Huff, and Bobby LaKind.
JD RyznarHOST
51:26
Uh, Greg was Michael McDonald's friend as a teenager.
JD RyznarHOST

He played in bands with him.

Are you familiar with him?
Brad WilliamsHOST
68:05
Oh, man.
Chris McHughGUEST
4:09
Mm-hmm.
Chris McHughGUEST
4:10
Um, yeah, what's funny is, uh, like, um, Dan Huff still uses that terminology where he says, "All right, l- l- let's, uh, let's try the Charleston beat on that."
Rich RedmondHOST
4:18
It's even like, "Oh, doom, ts, doom, boom."
Chris McHughGUEST
4:20
Yeah.
Chris McHughGUEST
5:04
Yes.
Rich RedmondHOST
5:05
And I thought to myself, "I have fucking made it.

It was so exciting.
Walter AfanasieffGUEST
8:43
Um, I played all the instruments.
Walter AfanasieffGUEST
8:45
Dan Huff played guitar, and then we sort of, uh, kinda lucked out, you know, really.
Walter AfanasieffGUEST
8:52
You know, 'cause I...
Walter AfanasieffGUEST
8:53
People come up to me and they go, "Who's the drummer on that song?" And I go, "That's me finger drumming." It's, you know.

10 MINS LATER

Walter AfanasieffGUEST
19:03
Um, but, uh, we did hire all these, all these musicians.
Walter AfanasieffGUEST
19:08
I remember going to the Hit, Hit Factory.
Walter AfanasieffGUEST
19:11
Uh, I had Dan Huff, Omar Hakim on drums, Greg Phillinganes on keyboards.
Walter AfanasieffGUEST
19:16
I had all these wonderful musicians, and they started learning the song, and we started playing it, and it just didn't sound-
Don BarnesGUEST

You know, the engine room, the best I could find.
Don BarnesGUEST
39:11
Dan Huff, you know, the titan in the industry now.

speaker_2HOST

I mean, that's a solid launch.
speaker_3HOST
0:49
Totally, and what's interesting is that he produced it himself, along with Dan Huff.
speaker_3HOST
0:54
That's a smart move.
speaker_2HOST
0:56
For sure, it's like he's really taking control of his sound.
Sam SlightHOST

think it makes complete sense and obviously i i suppose there's one being that this would have been in 1999 there is one sort of prime example of it working and paying off certainly once but in terms of pantera doubling down on the heft that they had on vulgar display going into far beyond driven getting in number one and then admittedly pushing even heavier on the great southern trend kill yes it didn't do quite as well but i think there's a a number of mitigating circumstances around that that aren't to do with the quality of the album it's to do with interpersonal stuff it would make sense also mega death themselves alongside slayer they've already set a template for it the speed wars being the fastest band in thrash to you know kind of outpace each other yeah i think it would have made a lot of sense
Steven HillHOST
39:43
i think that's the thing to do to look at sort of contemporary metal that's getting in an empty finger like we're a big band who sold millions of records and everybody else is kind of evening out a little bit so we're so the risk is to not to do that but they had other ideas dave mustaine had this idea in his head kind of poster and trust and that you know that they wanted to do something more palatable marty friedman the guitarist he's a great guitar player but you know wanted to be able to explore his more pop sensibilities and so um much like cryptic writings the bands once again decided to go into uh record with producer dan huff great name in nashville dan huff has worked with um such great metal artists as roberta flack bill withers dusty springfield michael bolton and more so seems like the perfect guy to capture the visceral grindcore inspired megadeth album that they that would have been a genuine risk but obviously they they didn't do that they didn't do that no
Sam SlightHOST

As he called it, I remember when we went there in 96 to record a Megadeth album, Cryptic Writings, Dan Huff's producer assistant, she said, This is basically just a really big one-horse town.
David EllefsonHOST
13:49
Yeah, yeah, it's true.
David EllefsonHOST
13:51

David EllefsonHOST
13:55
