And so it was kind of like this weird deconstruction over, like, 25 years that I've been working.

Danielle LawrenceGUEST
And so, you know, in grad school, uh, at Mills, I was taking apart painting to put it back together again, so I was really emphasizing the structure and the support, bending things, making, like, um, very, very clear architectural references with the structure bar, structure, and the stretcher bars.

Danielle LawrenceGUEST
Um, and then the canvas, you know, I was looking at people like Sam Gilliam, um, who takes the canvas and divorces it from the structure, or Lynda Benglis, who divorced paint from the structure and the substrate.

Danielle LawrenceGUEST
And so I was thinking about these folks and kind of, like, their radical politics, which, you know, if you look at painters from the late '60s and early '70s, all of the work that was being made at that time reflected the time in which it was made, right? So, you know, thinking about architecture and kind of, like, uh, how we define space like that, meaning, like, through parameters and limitations that are all just kind of fabricated and made up, I was like, "Oh, well, let's test this water out even more." And so fast-forward, you know, I am very interested in kind of, like, the stain related to Helen Frankenthaler, but also Mike Kelly.

Danielle LawrenceGUEST
Um, and then kind of looking at, like, quasi tie-dye stuff and kind of, like, this mind-expanding consciousness that, that kind of got bastardized now, but back in the day, like, you know, where did they get that idea? And then looking at Japanese, like, flung ink paintings, you know? So, like, it's all related.

Danielle LawrenceGUEST
But yeah, thinking about the stain as, as a marker related to Helen Frankenthaler and, um, kind of taking apart little fragments of the canvas to sew it back up and thinking about this as a site of construction and mending and care and needing ... 'Cause it's all, like, this patriarchal subjectivity that we're dealing with, and how do you kind of, like, take that apart to put it back together again so that it can be more fluid and more queer and more expansive?

Danielle, if we look at the broader fintech landscape in South Africa and we look at this particular market in comparison to other African markets and even other international fintech markets, how do we rank against our global peers, against our continental peers? Are we innovating enough in the landscape that we can see meaningful growth in the fintech world of South Africa?

Danielle LawrenceGUEST
So South Africa, interestingly enough, is quite unique globally from a fintech perspective.

Danielle LawrenceGUEST
We have one of the most sophisticated financial technology sectors in the world.

Danielle LawrenceGUEST
We have progressive regulators and we have that very strong fintech ecosystem.

Danielle LawrenceGUEST
I think our challenges around financial inclusion are similar to other emerging markets, but our regulatory and banking infrastructure are comparable to many developed markets, which is really, really impressive.

Jimmy MoyahaHOST
If we're looking at a transaction like this and we're looking at what this type of transaction then does for the investment case into FinTech in South Africa, How then do we use what we're learning from these sorts of transactions, understandably still a transaction that is in the works and on the move? How then do we start to perhaps as fintech innovators in South Africa or even as smaller fintech businesses, how do we start to leverage these type of transactions into attracting more investment into South Africa's fintech market?
