That was too much for the governor and sympathetic councilors like Daniel Gookin.

Instead, the court convicted anyone who had only recently arrived in the praying town, on the grounds that that was just too suspicious.

They'd clearly moved there to carry out their dastardly plan to burn a haystack in a neighboring town.

To cut a long story short, those soldiers had been sent to find the Nipmuc force, the expedition hadn't gone well, there'd been losses, morale and trust was low, and the commander of the force was losing control of the situation.

When some of his men became suspicious of Job, he went along with it, and soon sent the scout to prison.

After three weeks in jail, during which the people of Boston called for his death, Daniel Gookin, once again providing some protection from his more bloodthirsty peers, Job was sent to Deer Island.

In the meantime, the forces which had captured him were diverted to prepare for the march on Narragansett.
