Daniel and Charlotte run into Kate first and she is naturally interesting of their bullshit terrible lies when they're like, "Oh, we're looking for a backpack" that we just made up.

Whatever.

So this is what Grant says.

Alpert was only taking the word of a time-traveling John, who seemed to have answers, though John's whole life turned out to be a con by one of the island's godlike beings," the smoke thing.

"And also think of Daniel Faraday's mother, Eloise, who turned her son away from his interest in music to focus on studying physics, which tuned him to his destiny, something of which she was well aware.

Similarly, John Stewart has been chosen for a destiny, his mother visited by an ageless godlike being who checks in from time to time.

Is it a con to force John into a destiny he doesn't want? I'm also thinking of The Leftovers, where Kevin Garvey comes to believe that he has been chosen-

more to that, I think.

I think that Jeremy Davies gives a really spectacular performance as Daniel Faraday by doing this sort of like awkward under his breath cadence and weird pauses for his words, because it's clear that he's like a weird little dude who's been laughed at for his outlandish time travel theories for a long time.

And then we also learn.

I don't know if you picked up on it, but we learned some other stuff about him that is tells us why he's different at Oxford than he is now.

And we'll talk about that later.

So then he flashes back again to the army and he goes to call Penny and Penny is like, we just broke up, why the fuck are you calling me? Leave me alone, I moved out of the apartment so don't come by, leave me alone and hangs up.

He flashes back to the freighter and Saeed and Frank come in with the phone and they're like, hey, Daniel Faraday wants to talk to you.

Desmond's like, who? But he talks to him and Daniel's like, hey, I know you don't know who I am, but we met yesterday.
