It wasn't like an actual reinterpretation, although like, you know, to familiar ears, it was like kind of obvious which song he was reinterpreting.

So 50 years later, at this year's On Sound, the festival commissioned the Polish composer Piotr Kurek and the visual artist Wilhelm Sasnal to once again reinterpret that original folk song through music, through like a new composition, through visuals, but also in collaboration with the Slok Song and Dance Ensemble, who is the state-funded local folk ballet group who made the original recording of the song that David Bowie wrote.

Well, what was so interesting for me also was that the day before our conversation at Unsound in the discourse program, because Unsound, like what makes, one of the things that makes festivals like this so interesting is that there's all this music at night, but then during the day they do these like really robust discourse programs where there's like conversations and live podcasts and things like that.

The day before there was this conversation about folk music and it was specifically like sort of looking into contemporary like dance and experimental artists who are drawing from archives of folk music and it was very much a conversation about like how do you like make music and art that is like reinterpreting or drawing from an archive of folk music while being sort of like in relation with the music and not just being extractive about it um and it was a really interesting conversation um that not only like I think really set up the conversation that we had in a really good context, but also like there were two different musicians on that panel who are from Poland who were involved in contemporary projects that are really like in conversation with traditional Polish village music.

And they had like really strong feelings about the sort of state sponsored song and dance ensembles that we were talking about the next day, like actually not really being like real folk music and actually like, you know, being this sort of like composed like invention of the 1960s.

50s and 60s um so um that was like really interesting context too and um after that panel i talked to one of the musicians and like you know asked her her thoughts on this this specific folk song that we were going to be discussing the next day and she was like oh if you want to hear like real polish village music of that era like here's like a youtube channel um you should check out and um actually i wrote it down
