Let's jump right in.

My name is Dana Boyd, and I'm the Jerry Gay Professor of Communication at Cornell University and the author of Data Are Made, Not Found, A Story of Politics, Power, and the Civil Servants Who Saved the U.S. Census.

And I'm so pleased to speak to you today about this book.

This is not your first book.

If folks go and look up the Dana Boyd bibliography, they're going to find quite a number of titles.

And many of them, of course, co-authored with other folks that have been on the Tech Policy Press podcasts in the past.

You have been publishing, I guess, for what? Close to...

It suggests what an absolutely intense period this has been for you looking at this question.

And by that I mean context collapse.

Two researchers, Alex Marwick and Danah Boyd, published a study in 2011.

So online, all of your separate audiences, your mates, your critics, your customers, your journalists, your mum, they all collapse into a single indivisible crowd, and every word that you say has to be addressed to all of them at once, which means that a famous person can't reply to a person.

There is no such channel to do that, not publicly.
