So you can say, okay, for example, I have a paper with Dan Zahavi and we have the question, okay, how much does a drug like 5-MeO-DMT affect self-awareness? And what does that mean? So you can have a claim like you can be conscious and have no sense of self.

That is something you can argue about.

But first of all, you also need to go, okay, in what ways is self-awareness being changed? And then you can argue about the question is, can you get to a point where it's changed so much that it's not there at all? So then you need some sort of framework of what self-awareness is in a basic sense first to know if it's there or not.

And that's what I found when I dug down into the into the details of what people describe when they experience.

So it wasn't merely a philosophical disagreement.

For instance, Dan Zahavi has written a lot about self-consciousness.

So it wasn't just a disagreement on a conceptual level with whether Dan's conception versus their conception is right, but also trying to look at the descriptions and see what the difference is.
