So one of the things so I want to talk about the whistling while it's on my mind and just like Walter so much Walter and just like how kind of shockingly structurally unsound the movie is in that like okay so at the very end Walter needs to go up and he needs to do a talent show thing and he goes out and he starts whistling and it's impressive and everything and whatever and this is coming out of like completely nowhere He's never whistled.

Dan OlsonGUEST
And I was just sitting there like this is the most obvious joke in the world, which is that like you give this character a very obvious talent that they're using constantly through the movie.

Dan OlsonGUEST
But then when it comes time to like, oh, I got to try to do something, you have them waste a bunch of time on, you know, garbage that they're not even good at and it's like when there's the obvious answer there like you know the whole time and then someone's like hey why don't you try that thing you're a world class talent at hmm that just might work like it's it's sure it's a blunt joke but like It's the Muppets.

Dan OlsonGUEST
Like, you know, the Muppets is often at its best when it takes a blunt joke and really like goes with it.

So like context collapse isn't really a thing for this film, for Wicker Man, but Wicker Man is very much a movie about things in tension with one another.

And so the rise of like the IRA, so their economic bombing campaign started a few years earlier.
D
30:11Dan OlsonGUEST
And this movie was already in production, but their civilian bombing campaign began early 73, where they started bombing like train stations.

You have this movie being made in the context of the collapse of empire and the collapse of the strength of empire, the collapse of hegemony.

So, like, intuiting the next question would be, it's like, so what's your background with anime? Would be that, you know, I was like a big fan.

The word that it was called at the time was not one that we really, like, repeat a whole lot anymore.

But, you know, the question that I want to ask is that if you had a little girl today, right now, and again, whether it's Columbus or whether it's out on the West Coast, and they were talented, or maybe they weren't basketball players, what would you do, or how would you get them started into possibly developing as a player?

So like Steven was saying earlier, um, I'm in Minnesota, so we got a little bit all over the board for our planting season this year so far.

Dan OlsonGUEST
Um, we get to the southwest, uh, southern Minnesota, I mean, we got in early when it was that warm temperature like Shelby was saying, and guys went, we were dry.

Dan OlsonGUEST
Um, so a lot of acres were put in, um, corn and soybeans in that southwest Minnesota.

So not just a, like, straight parallel, but I see an expression of, of humanity in both of them, which is m- just motivated reasoning, that by and large, people believe things because it will confirm something else, or it, it justifies something else, or it motivates something else.

Dan OlsonGUEST
And ideally, that underlying motivation is a sense of, like, "I have a good grasp on reality as it exists.

Dan OlsonGUEST
I have been given knowledge that empowers me to accomplish things or do things or, you know, achieve things." And sometimes it's a narrative that empowers your worst behaviors and says that, "Oh, it is okay to be greedy and consumptive and acquisitive and exploitative because, you know, wealth is good.

Dan OlsonGUEST
Wealth makes me a good person." Uh, there's an old, there's an old saying that not every American is a Christian, but they are all Calvinists.

And, uh, I knew very early on when I was getting started on the channel that if I picked something like werewolf movies to talk about, that I would, I would rapidly, like, exhaust the material that I wanted to talk about.

Dan OlsonGUEST
So I specifically, when I was building the channel, I was like, "Okay, I need to make sure that I've got a framework that will allow me to just kinda like follow my interests, and go where the story is, where is the thing to talk about." And so that has allowed me to move kind of seamlessly from talking about specific movies or television shows, uh, books, et cetera, into talking about politics, propaganda, the meta-narrative of the military, something like crypto, something like the metaverse, which are effectively just these...
