Dan McCarney

Well, when Hayden Fry arrived, of course, it all changed dramatically.

for Iowa football in many, many ways, but certainly the rivalry was one-sided for the 15 years that John mentioned, and then the Cyclones, you know, Donnie Duncan, I mean, they had some great coaches, Johnny Majors at Iowa State, and the Hawks pretty well controlled that series through the early 80s into the 90s, and then Dan McCarney arrived in, ironically, the former Hawkeye arrived in Ames, and it all changed, I think, to John's point where it's been about a 500 series since then.

And so, you know, I think it's healthy, whatever that means.

I think the rivalry is back, as John mentioned.

So

that's a, that's a Dan McCarney, by the way, one of my favorites in coaching.

I talked to him this summer.

Just, I was asking him a couple, you know, a couple of guys numbers, trying to talk some guys and Dan McCarney, man, one of my favorite guys in coaching.

Got to know him a little bit when he was at the, North Texas, and then just talking about Iowa State days.

Shout out to Seneca Wallace and Dan McCartney.

The other one is a good friend of mine, Jack Whitford, has been battling brain tumor for years now.

And Matt pulled this up from Dan McCarney's Facebook page, which is just awesome.

It's his flashbacks to that 2002 CyHawk game, which was one of the best ones ever played.

Three guys who were a major part of that, Seneca Wallace and Lane Danielson and Jack.

And, um, I don't know if they were, like, friends with Dan McCarney, who was the head coach at the time, or what, but, like, this guy, Tim Gleason, and his friends showed up with this firetruck at Dan McCarney's house.

Can you imagine people showing up to [laughs]...

Anyway, so they show up to his house, and they're like, "Hey, we've got this old firetruck, and we're gonna take it..." They were playing, um, Iowa the next week, and they're like, "Hey, we're tired of losing to Iowa." It'd been 15 years in a row that they had lost to Iowa.

Like, "We're tired of it.

We're gonna drive this thing all the way to Iowa City, and, uh, we want you to get a win." And Dan McCarney, it was like he poked me in the chest, and he said, "If you get this old thing all the way to Iowa City, we're gonna get you guys a win." And they beat Iowa that year.

And so now that's how it, why it's become, like, this big tradition with Iowa State because it helped, like, snap that losing streak to Iowa, and it's become a tradition.

And to your point, McCarney went on a little run of his own, too.

He won, what, like five in a row there, things like that.

And that's when they went on that 15-year run.

Well, and that was the mindset of the head coach.

I mean, Dan McCarney has talked about Hayden Frye was legendary, that that was a must win.

Yep.

I don't see North Texas going into Indiana and getting boat raced.

Do you remember when Dan McCarney was the head coach there?

Yes.

Indiana did struggle in the first game last year.
