And then the industry responds to what Marvel does.

Um, Dan Buckley was interviewed by CV2, and he talked about the $399 price point and whether it was reasonable.

Quote, I think it's the appropriate price point for the entertainment value and quality that we offer in the books.

The $3.99 price point was already the price point for limited series and one-shots before we moved some of our regular series up.

It's also worth saying, and he talks about this more in the interview, it's a talking point for the conversation, is the... fact that in 2008 we had the economic downturn, the depression, the crash.

And that affected every industry.

However, Dan Buckley talks about the fact that comics tend to be contra-cyclical to the economy in the sense that even if the economy goes down, comics tend to either be unaffected or less affected comics.

The joke is often that comic books are price insensitive and that it doesn't matter how much they cost.

Truly, truly awful.

Got asked was, "Do you wanna run Marvel Television?" And I said, "Sure, I'll give it a try." Um, the story that I love to tell is I'm out to dinner with, with Dan Buckley, and my phone rings.

And at the time, Jeph Johns and I were sharing, you know.

In my head, he had steam coming out of his head.

And then I looked over at Dan Buckley and Joe Quesada, who literally had cartoon dollar signs in their eyes.

By the end of the night, I was the writer of Avengers.

I imagine Brevoort pulling out like an odd job from 007 about to throw his fedora at him.

Tell me about just kind of how that this project came about before we dig too much into it.

As I understand it, it happened on a meeting between Marvel president Dan Buckley and Jonathan Hickman.

That's how I understand it.

And I've not like explored the, you know, I haven't like made the documentary yet, but that's what they tell me.

This is Comic Book Club News for September 15, 2026.

While San Diego saw the passing of the torch from outgoing EIC CB Cebulski to incoming EIC Steve Wacker, New York is the first time we'll get to see what changes Wacker has in store.

But that's not the only big change happening at Marvel.

Dan Buckley, the frequently controversial former president and publisher now titled Head of Marvel Comics and Franchise, is also leaving the company next year after helping shepherd the new Midnight Universe line of books.

Before he exits, he'll be sitting down at New York Comic Con for a one-on-one interview.

Presented as part of ICV2's Insider Talks, Buckley will sit down with The Beat's Heidi MacDonald from 4pm to 4.30pm on the first Thursday of the con at the extremely hard-to-find River Pavilion to talk all about the future of comics.

So I'm gonna recount some stuff before we get into it.

So longtime sales and marketing executive David Gabriel is out and publisher Dan Buckley or head of story or whatever the hell they called him in, in this, uh, announcement is following him.

C.B. Cebulski is no longer editor-in-chief and he's been replaced by Steve Wacker.

A couple Disney folks in Brad Winderbaum and David Abdo are now leading Marvel overall.

But I think the thing is, is like all those changes, I...

Like for, for the reading purposes, David Gabriel being out doesn't really make a huge difference.

Dan Buckley might, but I mean, honestly like if you ask me to say what did Dan Buckley do for the past 10 years besides being the person who like made final decisions on big events, because that's come up in a number of oral histories, I really couldn't tell you.

But the thing is, is like C.B. Cebulski is coming off of a run where I was trying to think about it and I literally could not tell you like what is the def- what is the best comic or defining comic that came out of his run because you can't say House of X and Powers of X 'cause that was started before-

Seriously? Is he running for re-election? Probably.

Did he run for president once? Yes.

Okay.

Back in the 2000s, wasn't it?

One of the three pillars of that line is Philip Kennedy Johnson and Psytronics Midnight Spider-Man.

Uh, let's see here.

Johnson told IGN quote on the initial meeting with the three writers, senior editorial and Marvel president, Dan Buckley.

The quote from Dan, I remember most clearly was horror is in the front seat.
