Damon Baird

Either one of them aren't terribly deep characters.

Where I think Baird and Cole are just so good.

They're such great supporting characters to Marcus and Dom in the original trilogy.

It's really hard to follow up, and it doesn't really feel like they tried, to be honest with you.

I just need memorable characters.

And so I kind of want that, I want those personalities to be there because Cole and Baird, I mean, even when they gave Baird his own game in Gears Judgment, the companions they gave him were really bland and forgettable as well.

And so they have kind of struggled to nail new Gears characters ever since the original trilogy.

But yeah, I like the welcome back to a kind of feeling of like, you know, just everything about the movement, the gunplay.

That's it, yeah.

Yeah, I'm talking about like memorability, like just raw, like cold trained.

He's got his own rap at the end of the first game, like, you know, Baird's a sarcastic asshole, but he's using it to mask like an actual heart.

But you don't find that out more so until Judgment.

I'm the youngest and Benjamin's the youngest of Clayton and Anthony.

So, yeah, there's also characters like Cole, Baird, Anya, Hoffman.

I mean, just so many characters that can keep going.

There's something special about Marcus and Dom's relationship.

He's got his duffel bag when you meet him in Gears of War 2 right outside the hospital.

You know, they always have like the rookie or just something like that in the game.

Not all of them because obviously Cole and Baird aren't rookies, but I'm just saying that.

She is incredible, and it reminds me of Sam Byrne, okay, because she was the sailor in Gears 3.

She was talking crap to Baird.

She was, you know, even talking crap to Cole and even Carmine and all these, you know.

It reminds me of what I love about Gears.

You're right.

Like, you know, we can look back at Coltrane, we can look back at Baird.

However, I went back because-

Um, but yeah, I'm really, I'm, I'm enjoying it.

I miss Baird, not gonna lie.

He's my favorite of all time, and he's not here yet because of course this is before Baird showed up.

But it is funny, they do the little shout-outs, 'cause of course you hear about Cole Train in the background, 'cause of course he's playing basketball.

And-

Um, so yeah, E-Day is, is what people have wanted.

Uh, Judgment tried to do it a little bit, the game about Baird, and that one was, like, six weeks after E-Day, and this is finally kinda tackling that.

Can I, can I ask-

Um, this feels like, as you mentioned, this kind of return to form in terms of this is where we left off.

Um, 'cause even Gears of War Judgment was like a bit of a weird left swing, like it's a Baird based game.

'Cause again, that was like the Nathan Drake archetype was everywhere back then, and that's one of the nearest characters you can do in terms of quips, so let's do a game around him.

Um, so for me, I think it plays incredibly well.
