Dakshinamurthy

Shiva, particularly in the form of Arunachala.

Another very significant form of Shiva is the, uh, as Dakshinamurti.

Dakshinamurti is Lord Shiva in the form of a 16-year-old boy, and he is the Adi Guru, the original guru, the guru of all gurus.

So for devotees of Bhagavan, um, that is, Bhagavan is Dakshinamurti himself.

So the, um, the Bhagavan, uh...

And there's one of the, one of the very significant things about, uh, uh, Dakshinamurti, his teaching is...

His primary teaching is through silence.

It is through silence that he reveals the ultimate reality.

It's just something very profound referring to consciousness itself.

And in the Dakshinamurti Sotram, you can see that the consciousness that is Dakshinamurti, which is the southward facing Shiva, a biographical sketch maybe of Shankara, a 16 year old boy sitting with his five elderly disciples.

There, Shankara says in the hymn that the student is the Guru, the Guru is the Guru, and what happens between the student and the Guru is the Guru.

So Guru Yoga is that consciousness which transforms into knower, knowing, known.

The transmitter, the one to whom that transmission is given, and the space in which that transmission happens.

That's the Krama actually.

So acknowledging the Gurus that we've had in our life, knowing that like Dakshinamurti Stotram, knowing like Dattatreya, that idea of the 24 Gurus being nature itself, that is what's going to be referenced by the Mantra.

So let's just put that on the screen.

Well, Shiva is facing...

He's called as Dakshinamurti, meaning south-facing teacher.

In other words, the devotees have to worship looking at sides of the north.

And to have this yearning for the divine, to have this longing for the divine, everything around us has been created so that we learn about this secret of life.

Swami says, "Dakshinamurthy is revered as the teacher." One facet of Shiva is Dakshinamurthy, and where Dakshinamurthy, as the supreme preceptor, through silence, is conveying such deep lessons.

They say Dakshinamurthy was one morning walking in slow steps along the sea beach, and he looked at the waves, and he said, "Look at those waves, slow but systematic.

The waves carrying towards the shore a bit of straw, passing it on from one crest to another until that straw was deposited on the land." The sea is a broad expanse.

It is deep and it is mighty.

Eternal vigilance is the price of peace and happiness.

If you want to be always happy, if you want to be always peaceful, we have to be eternally vigilant.

When Dakshinamurthy looked at the sea, this is what he exclaimed.
