Dainin Katagiri

Cool band.

I would like to talk to you today about this, uh, little passage that appears in this book, Each Moment is the Universe: Zen and the Way of Being-Time by Dainin Katagiri.

Dainin Katagiri was, uh, a Zen teacher who came over to the United States at the behest of Shunryu Suzuki, Shunryu Suzuki, let's say that right, who was the founder of the San Francisco Zen Center, and he invited two people, uh, to help him out with the San Francisco Zen Center.

That was Dainin Katagiri and Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi.

Uh, Kobun was the teacher of my first Zen teacher, so that's my connection.

Never met, uh, Dainin Katagiri, but I remember back when I was with Tim, my first Zen teacher, there was a friend of his named Scott who was, uh, he was about to go off to Minneapolis, that's where Dainin Katagiri, uh, lived and taught, uh, to go study with Dainin Katagiri.

And I've been a few times to the, to the mon- well, I don't know if you'd call it a monastery, sort of re- retreat center called Hokyo-ji, which is in southern, uh, what did I say? Um, Minnesota, southern Minnesota.

I was g-- I was gonna say southern Minneapolis, but that's not right.
