Daegu

this was when captains were getting bonuses to stay in the army and they'd put a moratorium on apache guys assessing for the 160th so i had to get a waiver to assess and i assessed they didn't have a spot in b1 or c1 so they're like hey we'll give you chinooks in savannah and i was like hey i'll hand out towels in the gym i just want to be a part of the team here so i got chinooks in savannah went to savannah showed up and again this is i'd done three years as a platoon leader in germany 15 months of that deployed i show up go through green platoon at fort campbell you know seven eight months and i show up to alpha company third battalion which was the last chinook company that the regiment built you know as you know from your former service in the regiment there used to only be two chinook or three chinook companies alpha alpha second battalion bravo second battalion and bravo third battalion when the regiment became a regiment.

And they built three more Chinook companies, Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, and then A4 and B4 really were formed out of what was Echo Company, that was a standalone unit in Daegu, Korea.

But it was the last Chinook company built.

And Sergeant Major Julio Santos, who's with us here today, was my first platoon sergeant in the regiment.

And then fast forward, I think it was somewhere between 2010 and 2012, they stood up 4th Battalion.

The headquarters basically came out of portions of 1st Battalion and 2nd Battalion.

And then, like I mentioned earlier, you had E Company, which is a Chinook company in Daegu, Korea.

They pulled it out of Korea and moved all those assets to JBLM to form our 4th Battalion.

Quite similar, yes.

They were a highly exclusive regional clique of officers, mostly hailing from the Daegu and Gyeongsang regions.

Got it.

Under Presidents Park and Chun, this faction managed to completely monopolize the inner circles of power and the key security apparatus.

[laughs]

And you're still wearing your polo shirt from Daegu?

Yes, because I didn't change, uh, in two weeks, and so I decided to continue.

Uh, my bosses today at work, they asked me, "What's this?" Uh, so I will just keep it for the rest of my life.

[laughs]

Uh, but outdoor, um, Daegu crashed it all, so it was, uh, absolutely different to everything, uh, what we have experienced before.

And as I have the problem with the jet lag when I'm flying to the east, um, uh, to the west, sorry, um, it's, it's different to be here.

Buddhism begins with the idea that suffering is an inevitable part of life, and offers ways to confront it with greater calm and perspective.

At another Buddhism expo in Daegu, I meet 25-year-old Kim Soo-jin.

Soo-jin says Buddhism has an advantage over Christianity for some secular Koreans.

Rather than asking followers to place their faith in a deity, she says, it encourages them to have faith in themselves.

During that week, General MacArthur ordered General Walker to deploy from Japan and assume operational control of the campaign in Korea.

Walker set up his headquarters for the 8th U.S. Army in Korea at Taegu and on 13 July assumed command of USAFIK.

Shortly thereafter, he also took command of ROK ground forces.

Walker's objectives were to delay the enemy advance secure the current defensive line, and build up units and materiel for future offensive operations.

By early July, the ROK Army, which became badly disorganized after the fall of Seoul, had reformed to some extent.

From west to east, the ROK Army line was held by the 17th Regiment, the 2nd, Capital, 6th, and 8th Divisions, and the 23rd Regiment of the 3rd Division.

The major part of the NKPA conducted a main attack along a wide front against ROK-defended territory, which was everything east of the main Seoul-Taegu Railroad and Highway.

Five divisions moved south over the two mountain corridors, while a sixth, the 2nd Division, followed the road from Cheongju through Pyeong to Hwangang, where it entered the Seoul-Taegu Highway.
