D-STAR

We are Southern California's premier repeater system.

The PAPA system is a member-supported wide-area amateur radio network of interlinked analog FM, D-Star, DMR, and P-25 repeaters.

With over 80-plus repeaters, the PAPA system is providing extensive coverage of the Southern California region and beyond.

I don't need to buy a radio.

I have this device right here, and it goes to Wi-Fi, and I could do DMR, DSTAR, Fusion, and they don't care about repeaters.

They don't care about HF wires or antennas.

They just want to talk to people, and they get on, and it's the same thing when they talk on this device.

In fairness, they just don't talk natively to each other.

Now, as I say, looking around the UK, the, the, and possibly around the world as well, there are D-Star repeaters, there are Yaesu Fusion repeaters, and there are DMR repeaters, and that doesn't stop there.

Various modes go in as well.

However, they're the three main common modes that you're gonna find.

So once built, you install the card into the Raspberry Pi.

Uh, you will potentially need a monitor to connect to the Raspberry Pi to see what's going on, although you could get away without one if you're clever enough.

Uh, once the, uh, base system is up and working, you need to configure the hotspot to work as either a D-Star, DMR, Fusion, NXTN, P25, or M17, uh, depending on what type of radio you have.

So it's not just a one-off.

And then, of course, in its

marketing materials, big on DSTAR, but...

Pause on that, because interestingly, and I'll give credit where credit is due, I was listening to Josh's podcast there on Saturday evening after all of his travel, Josh Ham Radio Crash Course, and ICOM UK seems to have confirmed that this thing is indeed full duplex.

And if that is the truth...

So same answer as when people used to ask me, and still do sometimes, whether they should choose DMR, Yaesu System Fusion, or DSTAR.

figure out what's near you and use that.

DSTAR is a digital mode that's been around probably since the late 1990s.

ICOM and Kenwood are the two brands that that cover or that offer D-Star.

That one you might not see as often.

There are others around.

So Yaesu for Yaesu system fusion repeaters.

Lots of different brands for GMR.

And ICOM or Kenwood for D-Star.

Hope that's not overwhelming.
