Thousands of years ago, ancient China, Greece and Rome all had their own versions of football, some of which were more recognisable as the football of today than others.

The Chinese played a kind of competitive hacky sack called tsu-chu, incorporating a goal in the centre of the pitch with players trying to kick a ball into the hole to score points.

The Japanese later adapted this to be even more like hacky sack with a game called Kimari.

This was a favourite pastime of the imperial court.
