Friends, cryptic crosswords or British style crosswords are the kind of crosswords that you see in the back of the Nation magazine, although I don't think they run them anymore, or Harper's magazine or in newspapers in England.

The ones in England are so hard to do, I can't do them.

But I have some success solving cryptic crosswords of the American variety.

And I thought it would be fun to begin every episode with a cryptic crossword that remains unsolved until the following episode.

Just like how newspapers, they would run a crossword and then the next day they would give you the answer or something like that.

He can riff and rant and rave.

Okay.

I'd written a junior fiction book a few years ago with some secret codes and puzzles in it.

And that led me to meet Liam Reynolds, who writes The Cryptic Crossword for the other Saturday paper, and The Age as well.

And he also has a... an Instagram page, a website, an app called Minute Cryptic, which he runs with Angus Tiernan.

That has been turned into books as well.

And that's great.

Oh, and then someone, speaking of games, listener Jack wrote in, said, I heard on the most recent episode that David does cryptic crosswords.

I love doing those.

I think more people would get into them if they knew about them.

It's not how my mind works.

I can't do that stuff.

Cryptic crosswords are British, the British style of crosswords.

You Americans will have seen them in the back of Harper's Magazine and the Nation Magazine ran them for years and years, where every clue is its own little puzzle that you have to solve.
