I don't really want to go into much about the animal abuse because it's heartbreaking.

Yeah.

You can hear those stories.

I mean, I've been in social work 30 years and in practice I cannot recall one time where I've noticed the animal in the home because it just wasn't part of my, you know, it wasn't part of my thinking at the time.

I didn't know that about baby pee, you know, and Stephen's history of animal abuse and torture.

So, again, I think the point is it's, you know, it's having that professional curiosity to ask these questions, to bring them in formal social work meetings, to bring them in discussion as part of day-to-day assessment, day-to-day interventions that we do in social work.

Obviously, we know the answer to that question.

In upstate New York, an increase in animal cruelty investigations has led to calls for action.

Some state lawmakers are pushing for a statewide animal abuser registry.

More than two dozen New York counties, that's nearly half, have established their own lists.

What you're about to hear concerns a police report filed in June 2024, in the weeks after Micah's death was making headlines around the world.

A report is a record of an allegation, nothing more.

It is not evidence of guilt, and JP Miller has never been charged in connection with it, and Mandy and Liz walk carefully through why it could have been made in good faith or in bad faith.

So interestingly, as we were working on this episode, we received a number of FOIAs back from the Horry County Police Department, and we have to talk about one of them right now because it is egregious.

And why does this always happen on a Wednesday? We need to mention that this report was made on June 3rd, which is after Micah's death was all over the news, and we want to remind everyone that police reports are just that.

They are simply reports of allegations.

Okay.

Like, I think there should be much stricter laws in Jamaica around animal cruelty and stricter laws around spay and neutering cats and dogs because the stray population is unfortunately just completely rampant and there's so much suffering because of it.

And unfortunately, there's a lot of cruelty towards animals in this country and I would send a cease and desist to all of those people.

That was a good one.
