Now, when those hotels were in operation, as some of them still are, the argument I'm sure the government would make, or the reason that they are probably disproportionately I think we can say that disproportionately in poorer areas is a question of cost so if you put them in posher hotels more expensive hotels then the taxpayer ends up paying more that would be the argument on hotels I think the argument on the accommodation that is being used now, think, for example, of Crowborough in Kent, that's a different type of accommodation.

So you need to be able to find, whatever your policy is, once you've moved on from hotels, you need to be able to find the physical infrastructure to put the people into.

Now, in parts of inner-city London, inner-city Birmingham, that might be very hard to come by, precisely, because there isn't that sort of building necessary.

Brand new polling published today by YouGov, commissioned by The Times, has laid bare just how out of touch our political class truly is.

While official government policy is to allow migrants to roam free around areas like Crowborough, Wethersfield or wherever else they may be, the majority of the British public think they should be detained until their claims are heard.

As you can see, 57% believe they should be effectively imprisoned.

But there's more.

And I think the government needs to work harder.

But I do think we have reached a point where there needs to be something about detention rather than putting people into communities because it's just not sustainable.

So, Ranul, when you look at places like Crowborough, Piddington, Wethersfield, one of the things that really, really, I think, appalls people of all political persuasions is the fact they're simply free to wander around communities.

Nobody ever voted for that.

Sussex is starting to think much bigger.

One housing plan, one transport plan, one growth strategy, one prosperity plan, one new strategic authority with its thinking covering places as different as Hastings, Brighton, Crawley, Worthing, Crowborough, Erridge, Horsham, Midhurst, Chichester.

But perhaps one of the really interesting questions is where does the small and the experimental... and the hyper-local test and learn sit within the bigger, bigger, bigger.

When individual towns and cities become laboratories for solving very particular problems, housing, transport, pollution, sustainability, public spaces, and then are able to share what works from that at scale to the whole region, you get something quite unusual and you get something perhaps different to what Sussex is used to.

It is far too big and responsible and lucrative an undertaking for a private company, and it should be carried out and controlled by government, the proceeds being used towards the war debt.
