Crimes and Misdemeanors

I, I like s- something that's a little bit substantial.

Like, I love, like, I love, like, Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Oh, yeah.

Because I said-

And so that's the best I can do on normative grounds, not, not e- evolutionary grounds or empirical ground, but on normative grounds to argue that the best life really is the virtuous life of honesty.

Yeah, I like that example you, you gave of, uh, uh, Woody Allen's film, uh, Crimes and Misdemeanors, uh, where the eye doctor, uh, character, you know, has this secret double life with-

... a mistress, and then she turns dark and, and wants to tell his wife and ruin his life, and so he h- his brother is a, is a former mobster or whatever.

Anyway, he, he pulls his strings and, and eliminates her, right? And but then he has some, you know, qualms and doubts and uh uh, maybe I should, you know...

A- and he, so Woody's kinda playing with all those themes between Crimes and Misdemeanors, I guess.

Yeah.

Uh, so the, but the question is what y- what if you're a true psychopath and it really doesn't bother you, right?

Oh, oh, Manhattan Murder Mystery.

No. Oh, Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Crimes and Misdemeanors.

That is a phenomenal movie.

Phenomenal.

Woody asks the big questions in life in that

movie,

in Crimes and Misdemeanors.

This is a Valentine to old radio and just a very, very sweet movie.

Very, very well made in what I think was his most productive and successful period, the 80s, when Crimes and Misdemeanors and Broadway Danny Rose and Zellig and Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, and Hannah and Her Sisters.

He was really on a roll.

And there is a quote the author highlights to illustrate this.

It is from the film Crimes and Misdemeanors, spoken by the character Martin Bergman.

He says, Human happiness does not seem to have been included in the design of creation.

It is only we, with our capacity to love, that give meaning to the indifferent universe.

I have used Akiru before.

I have used Crimes and Misdemeanors before from Woody Allen.

Sometimes I use it in a different place because Johnston uses it in a different place, but I have done it as a sub there.

I've used... city slickers starring billy crystal okay sure you know yeah in that spot as well which is more entertaining yeah you know and and more cap deliveries uh in that film than there are in american beauty true um true significantly more yeah in that there's at least one more yeah at least one more out of total order of magnitude in some ways the lost watches in um Moving along.

I mean, no, look, really, now that we're talking, I mean, to paraphrase, and maybe this is a wrong person to paraphrase, depending upon what your feelings about him, but in the movie Crimes and Misdemeanors, Woody Allen's sister he asks her how her date was and she says oh it was terrible he you know we had dinner and everything and then we came home and he went to the bathroom on me and he says oh my god his hands fly to his head and he says human sexuality is such a mystery which I always found hilarious and also profound um I mean,

hence my career.

That's right.

About two minutes or so will be just fine.

And another movie that, again, if you can handle getting past the Woody Allen of it all, it's a very, very interesting movie.
