Crazy Heart

She's actually married to Peter Sarsgaard.

She's also known for the erotic comedy drama The Secretary and one of my favorite movies, Crazy Heart, opposite an Oscar-winning performance by Jeff Bridges.

We profiled her on Time Sensitive way back in season one in Netflix's The Kindergarten Teacher, which is one of our favorite movies of all time.

You know

yeah she directed and wrote it and yeah apparently no one liked it uh yeah she kind of did this movie and like didn't really take advantage of the um of the attention it got her because she did a couple things.

She did Crazy Heart, that's right, with Jeff Bridges.

I kind of like that movie.

But after that...

her debut since Ridgemont I mean she's I think

maybe just a little scary for people it's so she yeah it reminds me of Jeff Bridges in the early 90s when he was playing that raw nerve version of Jeff Bridges in Fearless and the Fisher King and Crazy Heart or American Heart like he had a real run where Jeff Bridges was just broken and nobody did it better and

I like that version of Jeff Bridges, actually.

I know he's known as the sleepy stoner guy.

Yeah, but within a few years, she would be Rachel in The Dark Knight.

She would be Opposite Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart.

Frank, White House Down, World Trade Center, Adaptation, Cecil B. Demented.

And guys, she directed The Bride this past year.

Mm-hmm.

And, uh, Judy Cairo, who made Crazy Heart, and her movie had just, Jeff Bridges had just won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Crazy Heart.

And, uh, she read that script, and she told me she knew in five pages she was gonna make the movie.

And from her saying she'd do it to us making it was about one calendar year.

It's like Crazy Heart.

It kinda reminded me of that where it's like, wow, you made up songs to try to feel authentic.

You didn't make the dark side, but you know.

[audience applauding] I'm laughing 'cause Dawson said we're gonna come back with Ryan Bingham's version from Crazy Heart, but it was all just acoustic guitar, so we wouldn't, wouldn't know if it was Jeff Bridges or not.

Good to see you, Ryan Bingham.

He first started playing guitar for his friends on the rodeo circuit.

Since getting his first record deal in 2007, Ryan Bingham has been on this show several times, released a bunch of albums, and won an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Grammy for his song The Weary Kind from the soundtrack he collaborated on with T-Bone Burnett for the 2009 film Crazy Heart.

He's touring this fall with backing band The Texas Gentleman to promote his latest album, They Call Us the Lucky Ones.

But before he went out on that tour, he stopped by World Cafe to record this special mini concert of some of his new songs.
