Lives of the Ancient Philosophers by François Fénelon Crates, contemporary with Polemo, the successor of Xenocrates in the school of Plato, flourished about the 113th Olympiad.

One of the most famous disciples of the celebrated Diogenes was Crates, the son of Ascandus, a Theban.

Lived in the office for three days, eating the plants.

Quite a sight it was.

Crate after crate yielded bottles, until all six were empty and the table high with straw; the only things that came out of these crates besides the bottles were a number of test-tubes and a carefully packed balance.

And directly the crates were unpacked, the stranger went to the window and set to work, not troubling in the least about the litter of straw, the fire which had gone out, the box of books outside, nor for the trunks and other luggage that had gone upstairs.

Crates and Diogenes, meeting in Hades, indulge their satire on the subject of the fates of two millionaire merchants, cousins, who had been constantly plotting in the usual manner, each for the other's legacy, and who had both perished on the same day by shipwreck.

The two eminent cynics congratulate themselves on the recollection of the very different character of their own objects in life.

You used, Diogenes, to know Maurecius, the rich fellow, the millionaire, him of Corinth, who owned those numerous merchant ships, whose cousin was Aristaeus, himself too a plutocrat, who used to quote that verse of Homer, Let one or other lift his man.

Why, Crates? They used to court and wheedle one the other for the sake of the expected legacy, being of the same age, and publicly registered their wills.

Maurecius, if he should die first, leaving Aristaeus master of all his property, and Aristaeus Maurecius, should he predecease the other.
