Police and city leadership have consistently said that recruitment is a priority and that they are working on getting a new exam together for the next class of academy recruits.

The turnouts aren't as big as they used to be, so we will do everything in our power to push that, Deputy Police Commissioner Craig Macy told the news in May, but officials still do not have a date set.

The department has not held an academy exam since 2023, and the only graduating academy class in 2020, which completed in January, had just four officers.

We are still working toward holding another exam, a police spokesperson said in an email.
