M
33:53Michael GardinerGUEST
Some of the DRIPO-related decisions, the Cowichan decision, a whole pile of things that the premier had yet to address and fix and didn't come to the campaign with solutions for those things.
M

So up against normal, it was a real tough pivot versus up against Carolyn Finley, which would have been a very different campaign.

But the reality is Indigenous people have been trying to negotiate Crown land, which is the treaty lands or territorial lands back into their community.
C

That's been going on for 30 years.
Are we at the dawn of a new West?
I

Actually, despite the premier's efforts with the constitutional reform questions on the referendum last week, it was never clear to me that Alberta was going to be at the forefront of this next round of constitutional adjustment in Canada because the problems of British Columbia are much sharper.
I
11:20Ian BrodieGUEST
In particular, if this Cowichan decision is on appeal now to the Court of Appeal, it's cast as kind of uncertainty over property rights and property arrangements across British Columbia.
I

It's not restricted.
I
11:32Ian BrodieGUEST
The sort of the freeze it's put on property transactions is not just in Richmond and not just within the couch and land claim area.

Additionally, we have nine wine regions.
J
13:41Jeff GuignardGUEST
And as I'm sure you know, a Pinot Noir from the Similkameen is an entirely different Pinot Noir than the ones you find in the Cowichan Valley or something like that.
J
13:49Jeff GuignardGUEST
The diversity of that is fascinating.
J
13:51Jeff GuignardGUEST
But from a membership perspective, that all adds up to something.

This is where you get your exposure to BC wine.
J
42:49Jeff GuignardGUEST
It's also wine trade and wine media like you, right? We want you to come and talk to the people who actually make the wine because the people behind those tables pouring them, these are often the brand new 2025 vintages, right? Or stuff that they, you know, the red wines have been aging for a few years.
J
43:05Jeff GuignardGUEST
They want to showcase what they have and you get to meet the people who grew those grapes who planted them and picked them and you know the winemakers and you get to have those conversations about their individual business find out their story it is the best way to explore BC wine and what I'm particularly about particularly excited about this year too is I think we have someone from all of our nine wine regions and so you can go around the room and as I said earlier you can taste Pinot Noir from the Similkameen and then taste you know Avril Creek from the Cowichan Valley and you'd be like wow that diversity of what we can do in They can't grow Syrah on the island, but they can down into Soyuz, right? And we've got that kind of excitement going on, different sparkling wines, new products.
J
43:45Jeff GuignardGUEST
So, yeah, it's a huge day.

I mean, it's one of the things I've always loved about Souk and the island itself, because you could see this all over the island, whether you're in Victoria or in Cowichan or Duncan or wherever you are, is that there's all these small little farmers and producers sort of all over the island.
R

Mm-hmm.

And, you know, I talked to a lot of chefs here in Vancouver and they say, well, where are all those, where are those people here? Like they're hard to find.

As you said, huge turnout for early voting in that riding, and that, as you said, that tends to reward the NDP, so it's really a toss-up.
M
42:29Mike KozakowskiGUEST
I don't think anybody knows how this is going to end in that riding, but you've got Highway 14, major, major point of contention in the continues up to Cowichan.
M
42:41Mike KozakowskiGUEST
And what does Cowichan have? The Malahat.
M
42:44Mike KozakowskiGUEST
So you've got these two corridors that the voters in either side of that riding are passionate about.
M
42:52Mike KozakowskiGUEST
They want something done with it to keep improving that road.
David Eby’s B.C. election gamble
M
18:44Menaka Raman-WilmsHOST
Why has this become such an issue in the election, Mike?
M
18:48Mike HagerGUEST
Well, there's been a couple rulings in recent years that have granted increasing rights to First Nations in B.C., the Cowichan decision.
M
19:04Mike HagerGUEST
which was a constitutional challenge, really kind of spurred on more debate about how their title claims intersect with private property rights.
M
19:17Mike HagerGUEST
And that exploded over the past year.
M
20:28Mike HagerGUEST
And so he attempted and ultimately backed out of amending it.
M
20:34Mike HagerGUEST
And now he says, you know, they're appealing certain court decisions.
M
20:39Mike HagerGUEST
They are appealing the Cowichan decision.
M
20:41Mike HagerGUEST
It likely will go to the Supreme Court of Canada.
